Examine the preserved and dissected cat, and locate the following features. Review with your lab partner the function of each feature as you locate it. Make at least three full page illustrations indicating the location of the listed features:
I. neck and thorax, II. ventral view of the brain, III. abdominal contents.
I. NECK AND THORAX
A. Respiratory system:
nasal cavity
larynx (voice box)
trachea (windpipe)
root of lungs (bronchi attach)
lungs
pleura (lining of the lungs)
diaphragm (divides thorax fr abdomen)
phrenic nerve (goes to diaphragm)
B. Cardiovascular system:
heart
pericardium (sac around heart)
atria (auricles, ear-like flaps)
ventricles (major muscular part)
superior vena cava (drains upper body)
inferior vena cava (drains lower body)
pulmonary trunk (delivers blood to lungs)
aorta (arches out top of heart to L rear)
carotid arteries (major arteries in neck)
descending aorta (along the backbone)
common iliac arteries (branch at end of aorta)
common iliac veins (run beside iliac arteries)
lymphatic system (injected with yellow latex)
thymus (gland just superior to heart)
lymph nodes along intestine
thyroid glands (on either side of trachea)
II. VENTRAL VIEW OF BRAIN
cerebrum, R and L hemispheres
cerebellum (below and behind cerebrum)
medulla oblongata (connects to sp cord)
pons ("bridge" between R&Lcerebellum)
optic nerve (forms a cross under brain)
olfactory tract (project forward)
III. ABDOMINAL CONTENTS.
peritoneum (membrane of abdomen)
spleen (upper L quadrant)
A. Digestive system:
salivary glands (in front of & below ear)
esophagus (muscular tube in thorax)
stomach (J-shaped bag below diaphrgm)
pyloric sphincter (exit valve fr stomach)
greater omentum (lacy fat, abdomen)
liver (largest abdominal, organ upper R)
gall bladder (green bag under liver)
duodenum (immediately after stomach)
pancreas (tucked in duodenum curve)
mesenteries (membranes attach)
ileocecal valve (connects sm to lg intst.)
colon (crosses to L, descends to rectum)
B. Urinary System, adrenals:
adrenal glands (glands above kidneys)
kidneys (R and L kidneys dif. level))
renal arteries (red vessels to kidneys)
renal veins (blue vessels to kidneys)
ureters (connect kidneys to bladder)
urinary bladder (sack just above pubis)
C. Reproductive system:
fem: ovaries (elongated bean-like
fallopian tubes (very short in cat)
uterus (two horns form a big "Y")
male: vas deferens (loops over ureters)
testes (in scrotum)
testicular/ovarian arteries
testicular/ovarian veins
IMPORTANT: When finished, return the organs to their correct positions, close peritoneal cavity. Wrap the skin closely around the cat. Slide the cat head first, belly down into the plastic bag. Press the air out, fold bag over lengthwise and secure the end with a three turns of a sturdy rubber band. Return to storage box with the label to the right. Clean up stray pieces and fur. Wash desk top with soap and water.
