Drosophila melanogaster salivary gland chromosomes


Taken in 2005 Genetics Lab, prepared by Sophomore students of genetics, David B. Fankhauser, professor

All were taken under oil immersion except the last which shows low power view of  the initial stage of a squashed gland.
The banding (almost like bar coding) is  excellent in many of these images. 

Note that, for those with the skill, the precise location on a particular chromosome can be deduced from the banding pattern. 
(Who DOES have that capability?)
