I spent my 1998-99 sabbatical year polishing my skills in genetic analysis techniques, and using them to conduct research in the Laboratory of Dr. Pedro Leon, at the the Cuidad de Investigacion part of the  Universidad de Costa Rica, in San Jose, Costa Rica.  I return to Cincinnati OH by April 1999.  I worked on three projects during my time there:
    1) assisted with the localization and identification of a gene which causes bipolar syndrome
    2) analyzed the genetic make-up of an isolated population of pigs on the Isla de Coca
    3) surveyed homeoboxes in amphibians (genes which regulate early development of limbs, segmentation, etc.)

I intend to build this page to include pictures of the researchers at this facility , and reports on my activities, and my wife Jill and my impressions of this culturally rich Central American nation.  This depends on being able to successfully scan pictures here, but it appears that this should be possible.

Here is an index of pictures relating to Costa Rica which I have scanned of our environs over the first month of our stay.  I refer to these in my "Updates" found under impressions .  Some of the pictures I have taken are scanned here in an index of orchid pictures taken at the Jardin de Lancester (Lancester Gardens) during the first week of febrero, 1999.

If you have PureVoice (an excellent audio software which can compress audio files a great deal without major loss of sound quality), here is a popular current Costa Rican song . [Does not play for me...  Still working on it--sorry, I haven't ironed out the kinks yet.  (Any help?  Please email me.)]
