This research followed protocols in the Ecology Laboratory Packet (Carter, 2004).
Soil
analysis was performed on several soil samples obtained from the
Hardness, chloride, and dissolved oxygen tests were performed on water obtained from the creek. The hardness test (ppm of CaCO3) (Carter, 2004) was performed on three 100 ml aliquots of each water sample. The chloride test (Carter, 2004) was performed on three 50-ml samples of water. The dissolved oxygen test (Carter, 2004) was performed on the water. A 203-ml sample of each water sample was titrated with thiosulfate. Random Pair Tree Analysis was performed on 19 pairs of trees in the woods that will be under construction. Five paces were taken between pairs of trees. The total basal area (mē) per hectare, were calculated (Carter, 2004).
Flora and fauna sampling including faunistic survey shrub plots and herb plots were performed. Faunistic survey was done at the pond, maple creek, and a grassy area by the college buildings. The pond was surveyed for 25 min. Maple creek and the surrounding woods were surveyed for 25 min in the same manner. Lastly, a grassy area was surveyed, for 15 min. The total species seen and the amounts of each were calculated (Carter, 2004).
Shrub plots were surveyed at two locations, both in the woods of the future construction site (Carter, 2004). Herb plots were surveyed at two locations (Carter, 2004) one at the south and one at the north edges of the future construction site.
